Duh, do you have a staring problem?

Yes, as a matter of fact I do have a staring problem. Humans, while in their natural habitat, are the most interesting animal to watch; this is especially true when they don't know they are being watched. Have you ever noticed how human behaviors and mannerisms change when the person knows they are being observed? Some people flick a switch to automatically morph into their fake persona. Some of us display our real emotions despite who it looking. I applaud those that can “dance like no one is watching”. Yet, many of us hide our true feelings from the world to see. I'm not sure which is more beneficial: wearing your heart on your sleeve, or remaining impassive? I suppose a balance between being gregarious and being aloof should be reached to maintain optimal emotional control.

Today, I got on the #21 bus, just like I do everyday. I noticed in my peripheral vision that I was being stared at. When I turned my head to look directly at the woman she would look down or turn her head like she was looking out the window. So, I ignored the peering eyes and went about the usual routine of staring at everyone that boarded the bus: old, young, fat, skinny, ugly or beautiful; it doesn't matter to me. As I did this I kept feeling the woman's eyes and every time I faced her she would turn her head. What nerve she has to act like she's not staring at me. After a couple bus stops of this game of “I'll catch you looking at me”, the woman got off the bus without making eye contact with me. I didn't really know what to make of the whole situation. Then at the same stop where the staring woman got off, a Chinese couple got on. The man had on medical scrubs and appeared to be in med school. The woman was wearing business attire and looked professional aside from a little dark bruise under her right eye. As I stared at the slender Chinese woman I pondered the different ways that she may have gotten the black eye. Did you run into a doorknob? Did she get hit with a baseball or did the student doctor give her a swift right hook to keep her in her place? She then lifted her head and looked back at me. Quickly in an almost embarrassing retreat, I sunk my head down and looked at my ipod like I was curious to see what song was on. I could not muster up enough gumption to make eye contact with her or her boyfriend. That's when I realized that I was doing the same thing as the staring woman was doing earlier. I did proceed to curiously glance at the couple until I exited the bus and in doing so I learned a lesson. It is not nice to stare and you don't realize that until you're the one being stared at. I'm going to continue to stare at people until I get a evil eye or an offended look. However, in the same respect, I will be ready for peering eyes to be staring at me and I will accept it because I know many of us do indeed have a staring problem.
